Iva was born at Treat Arkansas, deep in the Ozark Mountains and lived there until she was about 12. She told stories about how everyone had a small farm, lived off the land, and grew garden crops that were canned or dried. She enjoyed swimming in Piney Creek and Indian Creek. She said when she lived there, it looked different, there were a lot more people, there was even a school. She said there were a few families that had a car, but nearly everyone had a horse. She would ask her dad if she could borrow the horse to go to a friend's house, no need to buy gas!

Iva wrote a story several years ago about her childhood, this is her words:

We lived in a little cabin in the mountains, it had two rooms and was located near Piney creek. In one larger room, there was a fireplace, three full sized beds and several straight back chairs with cane bottoms. In one corner of the room, there was a small table with a radio on it and we could listen to the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday night.

In the other room was a wood burning cook stove with a reservoir on one end for hot water and above the stove was a warming oven where we stored our left-over food for another meal.

We didn't have electricity, we had oil burning lamps and in order to keep our milk and butter cool, we put it in the spring in a bucket with a lid. The spring coming out of the mountain was very cold. Right below the spring was a small stream of water that was so beautiful, running briskly and so clear. I loved that little stream of water. My brother Bob and I sailed our paper boats and we would run after them as far as we could.

What a great story and memory she had about growing up.

Iva enjoyed doing woodworking projects. She made her kids wooden reindeer and Santa sleds for Christmas and wooden refrigerator magnets. She loved to paint pictures, tend to her flowers and quilt. She made each of her kids and grandkids beautiful quilts that are still being used today.

Just a few years ago, Iva crocheted about 130 hats to be donated to the Children's Hospital in Northwest Arkansas.

She loved her kids and missed her son Timmy, she talked about him often. But, she really, really loved her grandkids! She always asked about them and wanted the best for them. She wanted them to be happy and successful and have lots of kids!
