“Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.” - The Sandlot

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a legend. Everett David Smith passed from this life on December 11, 2023, surrounded by his loved ones, a diet coke, and the echoes of a Dallas Cowboys win.

All legends have an origin story and Everett was no different. He was the youngest child of A.W. and Dulcia Smith, born and raised in Manila, Arkansas with his four siblings, Lois, Roxie, Sonny, and his equally ornery twin brother, Earnest. In his later years, one of his favorite things was to regale us with stories of the adventures and sometimes misadventures he had. No matter the story he told, it was obvious that his childhood was filled with fond memories, a strong work ethic, a love for animals, and, often, mischief.

In 1967, Everett met Marliyn, the love of his life, while pursuing a bachelor's degree in education at Arkansas State University, marking the beginning of a remarkable 56-year odyssey together. They laid down roots in Waldron, Arkansas, where they nurtured not just their beloved daughters, Tracie and Tara, but also countless young minds in his multiple roles within the Waldron School District.

Everyone always said, “Everett loves his girls.” Their home echoed with the laughter and challenges of raising a family, with Everett often humorously remarking about being outnumbered in a “house full of women.” Yet, he wore the titles of husband, father, and eventually, grandfather to Lauren and David, with unwavering pride and immeasurable love through the patience he had, and the sacrifices he made to make his family happy.

Everett, a man of many titles—son, brother, dad, husband, and papaw—held one above all: "coach." Yet, this title only skims the surface of his impact. He taught to love with our entire heart, to endure through challenges, and to seize every chance for laughter.

Everett leaves behind a loving and devoted family, a testament to the life he so beautifully lived. At the heart of this family is his cherished wife, Marilyn, his partner in life's journey for 56 years. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Tracie and Tara, and his twin brother, Earnest, with whom he shared not just a birthdate but a lifetime of memories. He is also survived by his two favorite grandchildren, Lauren and David, sister-in-law, Mary, sons-in-law, Wayne and Doug, and grandson-in-law, Michael.

A memorial service to celebrate Coach Everett Smith’s life will be held at Pottsville Methodist Church, in Pottsville, Arkansas on Friday, December 15, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, feel free to donate to the Waldron Booster Club in his honor at 1560 West 6th St, Waldron, AR, 72958.

Arrangments entrusted to the care of Russellville Family Funeral.
